Grandma Did WHAT?
Last night, my good friend Sarah and I decided to grab a drink (and a snack) at a popular Mexican restaurant on our way home from a previous engagment. It was a georgous evening so we decided to sit outside, chill out and catch up. We didn’t really notice the party of four sitting next to us.
The group consisted of a grandma (in her 60′s), her granddaughters who looked to be about four and seven years old, as well as the mother of these girls. All was fine. The girls seemed pretty well behaved for it being 10:30 p.m. Sarah and I were gabbing away in the airy evening when Grandma did something that took us by surprise.
Grandma decided it would be funny to start throwing ice at the little girls. The little girls jumped out of their seats and start laughing, trying to avoid the ice Grandma kept whipping at them. The girls kept squealing and dodging. Grandma kept digging her paws into her cup and flinging. The mother of these girls didn’t make a sound. (Maybe she was too mortified? Maybe should thought nothing of it? I have no idea.)
At one point the water from the flying ice was hitting Sarah. We tried to ignore the behavior as best we could for as long as possible. But at one point, our conversation stopped. We watched them in shock, jaws dropped. (It was impossible not to.)
Grandma did stop for a quick second when a server popped her head outside pretending to check on customers. Grandma told the girls to calm down and sit back in their chairs. But once that server was gone, as the girls headed to their seats, Grandma was right back at it.
The Grandma must have felt we were watching. At one point, she looked over at us and then admonished the wound up kids again. Our eyes got big. Our jaws dropped yet again. This grandmother was raising her voice to these children telling THEM to calm down, sit down and behave themselves.
Oh and intermixed within this were a few minutes where the girls were standing by grandma trying to see who could slap harder. Then Grandma started in on the slapping game too.
Finally the bill was paid and the absurdity stopped. As they left, Grandma said something to us along the lines of “now that we’re leaving you won’t have to deal with these rowdy kids the rest of your evening.” We couldn’t believe she was blaming the children for something SHE started and kept continuing. Apparently Grandma doesn’t understand the idea of leading by example. (Unless she wants her kids to grow up to be slack-jawed hillbillies.)
The only explanation I can think of was that Grandma doesn’t drink margaritas that often. And that she was pretty liquored up. Either that or she felt that since she was from Grey’s Summit, MO her behavior didn’t matter because she was in a place where no one knew her.
It was just such a strange happening. Anyone else have an obnoxious stranger story?
