Delivery turns dangerous

Posted by on August 3, 2009

rosesI know Kristie and I are on a “vacation” (ha!) but I came across a story that I feel compelled to share with you.

June 15, 2009 was an ordinary day for most people. But it was to be a happy day for the Stephan family. Debbie (Goff) had successfully delivered three beautiful, healthy babies. Her 6-year-old would finally have the siblings he’d always wanted. She and her husband Ken were thrilled. But the family’s dreams quickly turned into a nightmare.

Debbie had suffered from an Amniotic Fluid Embolism, a condition so rare, most doctors go their entire careers without seeing one.  Debbie quickly went into cardiac arrest, typical for this condition, but was revived. Debbie is one of the few that have fought past this first phase. According to friend Michelle, ”She needs a ventilator to breathe, dialysis in place of functioning kidneys, and is fighting everyday to keep her liver functioning. She has suffered multiple cardiac arrests.”

Currently, Debbie is still on life support. She can’t speak, care for, or bond with her babies. Michelle also writes, “She has a tracheotomy, continues full time kidney dialysis, is still draining excess fluid from her body, receives an antibiotic for an unknown infection/excess white blood cell count, has received more than 100 units of  blood, and is being prescribed antidepressants to help her deal with depression due to her condition.”

Neighbors, friends and relatives are helping Ken take care of the kids. But for anyone who’s been in the hospital? You know how fast those medical bills (even with insurance) can add up.  (My family witnessed this last summer.) A medical expense fund has been established.  Donations can be made to Bank of America,  Deborah M. Goff – Medical Fund (ATTN:  Patti Hickey, 15115 Manchester Road Ballwin, MO 63011). Please donate if you can.

I noticed a slight error in your story. Debbie actually delivered 2 girls and one boy. Maybe this is how you got the story sent to you, but I thought I would let you know. Thank you for posting this and bringing more prayers to Debbie!
