VeggieTales “Pistachio: The Little Boy That Woodn’t”

Posted by Kelli on March 16, 2010

PistachioThe familiar strains of the opening sequence are enough to bring a smile to your face.  “If you like to talk to tomatoes. If a squash can make you smile…”  And thus begins the newest VeggieTale, “Pistachio: The Little Boy That Woodn’t.

Putting a veggerific spin on the classic tale of Pinnochio, this movie is set in the Italian village of Bologni-Salami and follows a lonely toy maker named Gelato, his Monopoly loving pet ducks and his Caterpillar named Cricket.  Of course, Gelato longed for more than just the companionship of his toys, ducks and Caterpillar – he longed for a real boy of his own.

When given a piece of wood by his neighbor Pistachio, Gelato carves the figure of a little boy (played by Junior Asparagus) who immediately comes to life with a bit of an entitlement issue.  Little Pistachio believes he can do whatever he wants and can find happiness without any help – particularly without listening to the wise words of his father.

Using their signature humor through silly songs and jokes that kids and parents alike can laugh at, the tale of Pistachio teaches kids the importance of listening to mom and dad through lyrics like “A mother and a father know the ways to live life right so listen little children and your days will turn out right!”  Ah yes – that is exactly the message I love my children to get from a movie.

And, of course, let’s not forget about Silly Songs with Larry, a musical interlude that is nothing if not random. In this case it’s an obscure Broadway Tune called Where Have All the Staplers Gone?
