School Ties – Where Do You Fall?

Posted by on July 21, 2011

Here’s a question… the BIG question if you live in St. Louis… one that defines your very existence… where did you go to high school?  Or, the new (and more judgmental) version of that question I’m faced with on a daily basis… where are you going to send your kids to school?

Growing up in a small town I only had two options – the local public high school or carnival prep.  So I have been completely overwhelmed with the seemingly countless options – good options – we have here in St. Louis.

We’d love to hear where you stand on the public vs. private school decision.  Let us know what you decided and what guided your thought process.  Religion?  Money?  Friends?  Neighbors?  The quality of education?

It’s a big deal… let us know where you landed!

We opted for public because we live in an area that is either Parkway or Rockwood in any direction 10 miles. They are fabulous districts and seem to be as good as any private school. I would rather save our $$ to help pay for college, not go broke sending them to elementary-high school. A lot of people choose private for the additional religious training, but we feel like we have a grasp of that in our home through church and church events like youth group.

We do public as well. We’re lucky enough to live in a fabulous school district. He has had some slight learning issues years ago, but the teachers were so proactive and the help he received of such high quality that those things aren’t issues anymore.

As for high school some day? That will depend. If his hormones are out of control and he can’t seem to concentrate around girls? We’ll probably send him to an all boy’s school. (I sort of joke about that but really. If taking the girls out of the classroom means less distraction so he can learn, I’m all for it!)

Overall, just because I sent my son to public doesn’t mean I think everyone should. Everyone’s got to make the decision they feel are best for their family.

Well, I grew up in a small town and I teach in a small town and I am not from STL. I would like to say, though, that I feel very strongly about supporting the public school systems. On the other hand, if I had a choice, and I was worried about the public school choice, I wonder if I would choose private. I am interested, too, to read the comments that follow this post. I am surprised that, already the comments lead to the public school option.
